Let’s discover central Madrid together, the gorgeous historic heart of the city that has its origins in the Habsburg Dynasty.

For anyone who wants to delve into the historical, cultural, and architectural development of Madrid during the 16th and 17th centuries, when much of the city center was built, this is the tour for you.

During this city walk, we’ll discover the charming Madrid de las Austrias, the historic heart of the city that owes much of its opulence and grandeur to that famous European dynasty - the Habsburgs.

On our walk, we’ll crisscross the city center, visiting iconic locations like Puerta del Sol, the majestic Royal Palace, the cozy Plaza Mayor, the impressive and somewhat odd Catedral de la Almudena, and the famous Mercado San Miguel.

Along the way, you’ll learn about how the Habsburg rulers left their mark on the city and how this part of Madrid developed into the political and cultural center of Spain.

One of my favorite tours, I think this is the perfect introduction to the city.

While much of Madrid’s historic center dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, a fair deal of it is newer than that, having largely developed in a different era - during the 18th century when the House of Bourbon ruled over Madrid.

So, if you want to explore a slightly more modern side of Madrid, this tour will take you through our splendid monuments and landmarks dating from the 1700’s onwards.

During this walking tour, we’ll discover the Madrid of the Bourbon dynasty and the iconic "Paisaje de la Luz," a district that was recognized by UNESCO as an Urban Landscape in 2021.

Along the way, we’ll visit some of the city's most impressive sights, including the Puerta del Sol, Barrio de Las Letras - our historic literary quarter, the iconic Cibeles Fountain, the Puerta de Alcalá - one of the monumental city gates -, the stately Paseo del Prado, and the tranquil paths of Retiro Park.

This walk offers insights into the monumental, cultural, and urban development of Madrid, and it’s also an opportunity to experience the harmony between architecture, nature, and culture.

Discover Madrid's authentic tapas culture on a tour of the historic Plaza Mayor and the vibrant La Latina neighborhood, one of the best parts of Madrid for eating and drinking.

We’ll start the tour in the Plaza Mayor, enjoying the grand square and iconic architecture before heading into our first bar, where we’ll wet our appetites with a sampling of tapas and a drink.

Whenever we’re feeling ready to try something new, we’ll make our way south to La Latina, one of Madrid’s oldest and loveliest neighborhoods. A mecca for food, this is almost certainly the best place in the city to hop from one spot to the next, sampling the finest morsels that Madrid has to offer.

Here, along Calle de la Cava Baja (one of the neighborhood’s principal streets) there are over 50 bars and restaurants (!!), and the street is always filled with Madrileños out enjoying a drink, a bite to eat, and a chat with friends.

We’ll dig in again here, stopping in at two more restaurants thatserve up excellent classics and regional specialties. Between these two visits and the one in Plaza Mayor, you can expect to enjoy a full meal and finish the tour very well fed!

By the end of the tour, you’ll not only have explored two of Madrid’s nicest areas (the historic center and La Latina), but will have sampled a delicious selection of traditional dishes, drunk some great local wine or beer, and have gained a deeper understanding into traditional Spanish cuisine.

This is a half-day experience that includes a 2-hour walk through the historic center of Madrid, followed by a visit to either the Royal Palace or the Prado Museum.

Royal Palace and City Walk

If you opt for the Royal Palace, our walking tour will take us through the historic city center, in the part of the city known as “Madrid de Las Austrias”.

There, we’ll visit unmissable sights like the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Mercado San Miguel, the Plaza de Oriente, and the Almudena Cathedral, just across from the Royal Palace.

After our city wander, we’ll head into the Royal Palace, one of the most magnificent structures in all of Spain and among the largest palaces in Europe.

In the palace, we’ll visit some of its most majestic rooms and areas, including the grand staircase, dining hall, royal chapel, and throne room.

Prado Museum and City Walk

Alternatively, if you choose to visit the Prado Museum, we’ll instead explore the UNESCO-designated area known as the “Paisaje da la Luz”. Here, we’ll explore one of my favorite parts of Madrid, checking out the Cibeles fountain, Puerta de Alcalá - one of the great city gates -, the leafy and serene Retiro Park, and the ever-elegant Paseo del Prado.

Our walk will take around 2 hours, and we’ll then spend the rest of our time together (another 2 hours) touring the Prado, one of the world’s great art museums.

This full-day excursion to Toledo starts at Madrid’s Atocha train station at 9:00 AM, with arrival to Toledo at 10:00. From the station, we’ll take a panoramic car ride into the city’s former Jewish quarter, catching some incredible views along the way.

Here, we’ll start our tour by visiting one of the 12th century medieval synagogues, and will then wind our way through the streets of the medina-like historic center, exploring and learning about its sights, monuments, and landmarks.

During our walk, we’ll stop in at one of Toledo’s other great monuments, either the Church of Santo Tomé, where the famous El Greco painting is housed, or the tower of the Church of San Ildefonso, which offers incredible views over the city. It’s your choice which one we go to!

After that, we’ll make our way to the incredible Catedral Primada, lying in the heart of the city. We’ll tour the cathedral inside and out, after which it should be around lunchtime.

At this point, I’ll make recommendations for some of my favorite lunch spots, but you’re of course free to choose wherever you’d like.

Following lunch, we’ll have some time for shopping, to check out the famous Toledo swords, and go for a little informal wander through the center. We’ll then start the walk back down to the train station, arriving in time to catch the 4:30 PM train.
