Would you like to discover and explore the area that the Portuguese royalty chose for its summer residences and getaways? We will start our tour by going to Sintra, a wonderful mountain range with a micro-climate that provides it with hundreds of different species of flora.

For centuries, this place served as the summer residence for our kinds and queens, and we will have the opportunity to explore its historical center before visiting the Medieval Palace where the royalty resided. Many of the palace’s rooms are covered in tiles, and as a huge tile lover myself, I want to share with you all about them!

Next, after driving by the beach of Guincho (where I love taking my dog so that she can run and chase the seagulls), we will reach Cascais, a summer resort developed during the late 19th and beginning of the 20th century, which still shows its links to its past as a fisherman's village. I'd love to hear from you if there is any similar place where you come from! On the way back to Lisbon we will pass by Estoril's Casino.

Some of the places we’ll visit:

  • Sintra's historical center

  • Visit of the Vila Palace

  • Free time in Sintra town for walking/shopping/tasting the local sweets

We will start our tour going to Queluz, a wonderful 18th century royal palace, first used by our kings as a summer residence and that became their home for 13 years before the royal family flee to Brazil. One of my favorites, because its unknown to the masses, which makes it really special to visit as often we are the only ones there.

We will explore the palace gardens before heading to Sintra, a fairy tale town and a paradise for our kings over the centuries due to its cooler climate and exuberant vegetation.

In Sintra you’ll have some free time to explore this historical town on your own and to have lunch - a traditional restaurant is a must to try local flavors.

From Sintra, we’ll drive to the refreshing beach of Guincho, and will then continue on to Cascais, a summer place resort developed during the late 19th and beginning of the 20th century, which still shows its links to its past as a fishing village.

Right after, we’ll head to Monserrate palace, a 19th century romantic & revivalist construction built by Francis Cook, a wealthy British merchant who also surrounded his palace with a luxuriant botanical garden that we will explore together.
After touring the palace, there will be a break for lunch, and when you’re ready, we’ll drive up the mountain of Sintra to the isolated Capuchos Convent, a 16th century Capuchin friars convent, that was so well designed as to almost become a part of the surrounding nature.

Next, we cannot miss the José Maria da Fonseca wine cellar, where we will taste their delicious wine. Right after, we will learn how local cheese is made and try some Azeitão cheese and Moscatel wine, along with some Tortas de Azeitão - the famous local sweets.

This is one of my favourite tours because it takes us into the countryside! There is much more to see and discover outside Lisbon, so come join me and let's spend a beautiful day exploring the countryside.

The day will start by heading to Alcobaça, a UNESCO site since 1983, and home to the biggest Cistercian community in Portugal until the 19th century. After visiting this beautiful monastery where the tombs of the most well-known Portuguese lovebirds still are, we will head to Nazaré, an old fishermen's village that became very popular among the inhabitants of this region who come for its beach.

Our day cannot end without passing by Óbidos, a medieval village surrounded by walls, where the local specialty is a sour cherry liquor served in a cup of chocolate! A very local and traditional flavor that you must try.
